Thanks, Rick, for mentioning Michael, and for some great advice. I think it helps to give real world examples when passing out advice; otherwise people tend to tune out. Michael was a very experienced hiker, but he was hiking alone, and likely made an error in judgment somewhere along the way. I know he was also reluctant to carry certain pieces of gear, like a whistle. I would just like your audience to imagine what it was like for us - realizing that Michael should have been back, but wasn't; getting the call that they had found his car, then his backpack; waiting at the command post day after day; knowing that the odds of finding him alive were going down every hour; then the feeling that I had betrayed or abandoned him when I left Yosemite for the last time, after the search had ended. One of the "taglines" I use for PACK6 is "Someone you love is waiting for you at home." Never forget it.

Your mother-in-law is in a class I teach for the adult school and sent me a link to your site. Another excellent site for satellite viewing is: heavens-above.com

I have managed to use a telescope to photograph the ISS, quite a challenge, but possible.

Posted on Bob's website on March 16th, 2012:

We regret to inform you that we were recently notified that our appeal to obtain the required State permit has been denied. Without this permit, we are also unable to obtain the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration needed to purchase iodine. Because of the denial of the permit and extensive State and Federal regulations as well as EPA regulations regarding iodine, we are unable to manufacture or sell Polar Pure at this time. This may or may not mean an end to our small family business of nearly 30 years.

Steve, thanks for visiting the site. Although I love Yosemite Falls, I am not sure there is a picture on the site from the pool above the falls. If you could let me know which image you are referring to, I can probably let you know where it is from.

Thanks for the comment, and sorry for the confusion. The categories are from the Bulls Eye picture, but I guess I wasn't clear:

Weight (Wt), Bulk (Bk), Value (Va), Cost ($), Convenience (Cv) and Pleasure (Pl)

Let us know what criteria you consider when packing. - rick

Loved the table approach (with 1, 2, 3) for each of the choices, but could you publish a key for what the terms across the top are? For example, I can guess most, but what is Cv?

Well done! I was sitting down to write a primer on knots for a friend of mine who wanted to learn 2 or 3 useful knots and then I came across this post. You know what? Try as I might, I can't match the efficacy or brevity of what you've written here! Thus, your post is the first thing I will email to my friend. Thanks!
